The Business Case for Corporate Governance

IFC's Corporate Governance Unit runs regular trainings on the IFC Corporate Governance Methodology. These trainings are case study based, using real examples of recent IFC investments. It is anticipated that all IFC IOs will be trained on the Methodology. The Investment Officers Training Syllabus is available here.

The Business Case for Corporate Governance (BCCG) is a full course on the IFC methodology of evaluating corporate governance performance of IFC clients.

Typically, it is delivered to industry-specific departments at Headquarters, allowing us to tailor the content to a particular industry. The timing of the BCCG course is very flexible: it can be conveniently scheduled as part of other department-wide or field-staff trainings held in Washington.

Please note that the BCCG course can be offered in the field whenever COACG are able to coordinate it with respective field offices.

Typically, the BCCG training course requires a full day attendance. However, when the number of staff is small (as in some field offices) or there is limited time, it can be condensed into a half-day session. In general, the average number of participants in training sessions conducted at Headquarters is about 20 - 24.

Corporate Governance Training for IFC-Nominated Directors

COACG conducts two training sessions a year on corporate governance for the cadre of IFC-nominated directors. The training curriculum is designed for both IFC staff and outside consultants who serve as IFC-nominated directors on corporate boards of IFC clients.
Typically, COACG holds one training session (usually in December) in Washington and one in a field office.

The director training combines the IFC-developed best practices and methodologies with, what participants find particularly valuable, the key insights from leading experts and practitioners. For example, the last headquarters session included Professor Ulrich Steger of the Institute for Management Development and the last field training featured presentations by the Hong Kong Institute of Directors.

IFC's Approach to Governance and Shareholder Rights

This is an interactive two-hour long class which is a part of the Credit/Advanced Credit Issues Course held by the IFC's Credit Department for new investment officers and analysts and senior level staff. This class is a joint event by the Legal Department and COACG. It offered two times a year as an inter-active presentation on IFC's approach to governance and shareholder rights. The slides for this class are available on our website.
